Shoot Chute

Normally, your butler (or at the very least, your live-in Kato Kaelin) is there to retrieve your rebounds, however your new 5am workout regime has recently left you on the court by your lonesome. So you should check out the SKLZ Shoot-Around ($30.00) basketball return chute. Simply attach it to the rim and every shot you hit (which come on, is 99.9% of the time) will come right back to you, saving your precious energy for your afternoon squash set with Caroline Kennedy. It features a 180-degree rotation system so you can practice from any position on the court. Between this and your Spalding Neverflat Basketball, your game will be completely Lin-sane.

 City Of God

Copa…Copacabana

Between Carnival, Copacabana, and the women of Ipanema, your memories of Rio de Janeiro are blurred but happy. If you want to see a rougher side of Brazil then watch City of God ($15.00). Based on a true story, the film takes place in a slum just outside Rio de Janeiro where crime and poverty rule the streets. A young boy’s camera lens allows him to see through the oppressive circumstances and come out on the other side. It’s got enough drugs, corrupt police, and gang violence to make you second-guess your reunion trip.

The Gambler

An Oldie, But Goodie

Though you’re not quite familiar with the concept of losing your self-control (much like one of those Golden Retrievers who can balance a treat on his nose without eating it), some people do indeed get out of hand, especially when it comes to a wager. In The Gambler ($10.00), James Caan plays a brilliant college professor with a not-so-moderate gambling addiction. Pursued by a bookie who wants him dead (Paul Sorvino), he books it to Vegas to win back everything he’s lost to pay off his debts. Caan is stunning in his portrayal of a compulsive gambler, and the film takes an interesting look at gambling addiction and the toll it takes on not just the afflicted, but also everyone around him. Caan rocks a very impressive fro and sideburns that only 1974 could produce. The stellar cast is rounded out by Lauren Hutton, James Woods, Burt Young, and Morris Carnovsky.

Cue The Hi-Hat

Jazz Hands—much like jalapeños, hair product, and crying to get what you want—are to be used sparingly. But The Perfect Jazz Collection ($41.00) is something you can never get enough of, especially in the company of the ladies. This 25 CD box set collection has the original recordings of every jazz master to ever grace a smoky stage, from Louis Armstrong to Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, the Thelonius Monk Quartet, Nina Simone, Herbie Hancock and Charlie Parker, plus many, many more. Bust out your porkpie hat, and put on your toe-tapping shoes—it’s getting very cool in here.
